Since school is getting back into session in the coming months, it’s time to plan a dorm party. Everyone knows partying in the dorms isn’t the easiest, but it’s bound to happen. Pre-gaming in the dorms is something every college student experiences before going out for the night. When you throw a dorm party, the point is to get rallied up so you’ll have a great night out.
Now that COVID is on its way out (not completely but almost), we can start planning the best ways to have a lit dorm party. The people living on your floor will remember you for the rest of their life after college as the ones who threw the best party in the dorms.
Remember, safety first. This blog [macionthemove.com] does not condone or promote underage drinking. Take into consideration COVID-19 cases in your area to determine if throwing a dorm party is acceptable or not.
1. Curate a Fire Playlist
The best way to throw a great party is to have the best playlist. The funny thing about college dorms is that you’ll actually meet many people who know how to DJ. Invite one of them to join in on the party and DJ for the night. It’s a great way for them to play in front of a crowd, and you get great music!
If you aren’t lucky enough to find someone who already knows how to DJ, then make sure you get a good speaker and plug it into the aux! Browsing Spotify’s global top 50 is an effortless way to find songs that are trending right now.
2. Clean it Up
Look, the dorm rooms are so limited on space already that extra clutter is just in the way. Make sure to clean everything up. You’ll want to make a good impression, too especially if you expect people you don’t really know to show up. The last thing anyone wants is to see your dirty clothes on the floor!
Hidden storage like under the bed or in the closet is a great way to keep the place organized and tidy. This also helps to hide valuable items that you don’t want being stolen.
3. Pick a Theme
Themed parties are so much fun. Not everyone has to dress up, but having the option is the best. try a theme like luau, roaring 20s, or masquerade. Any local thrift store has plenty of supplies for you to find things for your theme.
One of my favorite trending themes as of late is a neon wig theme. It’s hilarious to get the guys involved and put them in beautiful, long-flowing wigs. Everyone loves it, and it’s always a good time.
Some themes to think of include:
Roaring 20s
Everyone loves Great Gatsby, so pump up those old money vibes with a roaring 20s theme. Dressing up in the flapper outfit is also so cute and fun. Grab your pearls!
Luau
If you’re throwing your party at the beginning of the year, then it’s going to be HOT. A luau theme party allows you to break out the fruit punch and Hawaiian shirts! This is a really easy theme that many people can participate in because Hawaiian shirts can be found at any thrift store.
Wigs
Wig parties are SO fun. Everyone gets to try out a new colorful hairstyle! When you have a whole crowd of people wearing wigs, all eyes will be on your group. I think these types of parties are the best!
4. Hang Some Decorations
This definitely goes hand in hand with picking a theme. Hang decorations! Liven the place up with string lights or neon LED lights. You could try a disco ball or a strobe light, too. The dorm’s fluorescent lighting just doesn’t always cut it.
Also, let’s be honest. The dorms are already ugly. If you need help decorating your dorm, we have you covered. Adding little decorations really helps to liven up the room and the party. Your guests will definitely appreciate you going the extra mile.
5. Befriend Your RA
Before you venture out to throw this dorm rager, make sure you and your RA are on good terms. The RA is there to make sure no one is drinking, or doing dangerous activities. They’re really there to ensure your safety, so don’t villainize them.
When you first move into the dorm, make sure to go out of your way to become friends with the RA. This gives you so many advantages. They will be much more lenient to having you throw a party and might even stop by! Also remember to tell your neighbors your plans, and invite them.
6. Invite the Neighbors
As mentioned just before, make a point to invite your neighbors! The last thing you want to do is make enemies in college and that starts in the dorm. Be considerate because you will want other people to do the same. Make sure to let your neighbors know of your plans and get them on board.
Invite them, too! Who knows, it may just lead to a really great friendship. It would also be nice to have extra people on your side.
7. Watch the Noise Level
A lot of dorms operate on a strike system. That means three strikes, and you are kicked out! Avoid getting strikes by keeping the noise level down. This also includes making sure there are no illicit substances out. Underage drinking, and especially drinking in the dorms, are forbidden.
It’s a huge deal if you’re caught in the dorms drinking or smoking. You won’t get a nice amount of time to pack and move. You’ll literally be kicked out and need to find housing on your own. Please don’t ruin your first year in college by letting someone bring something they shouldn’t.
8. Provide Water and Snacks
I actually don’t know any dorm party that I’ve been to where there were snacks. This means you can go above and beyond! Provide snacks and water for guests at your party. This might be an easier feat if you’re only inviting a few friends for a chill hangout.
Water is definitely a must. You don’t know if people coming have drank before coming, and they could benefit from water. This is especially important at the beginning of the year when summer temperatures are still raging. Your friends/guests will be praising you for your brilliance when you help quench their thirst.
9. Clean Up After
When the party’s over, and everyone goes back to their room, don’t forget to clean up! Drinks may be spilled, and snacks will end up crushed on the floor. Clean your dorm room to be respectful to your roommate. You’re not going to want to be dealing with bugs in your room either, um, ew!
You won’t be alone in this. Get your roommate and get the tunes pumping the next morning while you clean everything up. You’ll feel so much better in a fresh dorm room, anyway.
10. Throw Another One
In some ways dorm parties are better than going out. You’re providing a place for yourself and other students to congregate and have a good time. It’s somewhat safer than students going out on the town to find a party. People are off the streets, and it’s much easier for them to get home. So, think of it almost as a service!
Do be careful about planning your next party. Remember to always stay considerate. You don’t want to annoy or frustrate anyone by partying too hard too much. Make friends here not enemies!
With that, have a blast in the dorms and make the most out of it. There will only be one time you live in the dorms, and it might suck. Do what you can to make the most out of living in a crowded, stinky situation.
